Ladies and gentlemen, behold our latest video blog:
[Vimeo 2974135]
A couple weeks ago, I was invited to go to the Manitoba legislative building to talk about new media government funding with other companies and the Minister of Technology. (and science and energy and mines) While the video blog is kinda goofy, the actual meeting was upbeat and sincere. The idea is to make it easier for new media companies to get off the ground in Winnipeg, and it seems like there are some folks in government who want to make this happen.
Unfortunately, governments contain a lot of slow-moving bureaucracy that is hard to control. Right now there are a fair number of stumbling blocks in the fund application process. We managed to help identify these issues and it seems like they will be fixed.
The meeting ended with all the involved parties feeling pretty hopeful about the future. All in all, it was a pretty fun and exciting morning.

After a couple of weeks of work, I’m finally happy with the Heroes + Villains logo. Woo! And to celebrate, we’ve released a brand new wallpaper! Feel free to gird your desktop with the following:

Yes, we have a shiny new site! At the same time we’re pushing ahead with our iPhone game:
“Heroes and Villains”.

The art style and game design continue to evolve as we port our prototype to the iPhone hardware. Katie’s been redesigning the art so it’ll look great on the small resolution and Ian has been redesigning the gameplay so that it will play well on the limited hardware and make full use of the ‘Phone’s unique input methods. Here’s a screenshot of a basic test running my ol’ iPod Touch:

Will the final game actually look anything like this? That’s a very good question, and we won’t know the answer to that for a while!

Chris has just finished his redesign of our website. You’re looking at it right now!
The site now contains much more functionality and it’ll be a lot more pleasant for us to make updates as well. We have Vimeo, Flickr and Twitter all nicely integrated into the right side bar. If you poke around the site you’ll notice all sorts of cool touches that Chris has integrated, like the pop-up screenshots, logins, custom-coded plugins – but most of all you’ll notice the style. This is a slick site!
The site also has some new content – for example, check out the Games page for a teaser description of Heroes and Villains. If you look around, you might find more new stuff…
Let us know what you think of the new site! Chris busted his balls chrunch-timing it the last few days, and I’m sure he’d love to hear your feedback. (you can see a small piece of his epic journey here) We’ve been manually porting over old posts and comments from our last site, but not everything is back up yet. If you notice anything out of place, please tell us about it.
Also note that you can choose to register an account to post comments with now. When we launch our forums, this account can also be used to post on them. So why not go for it now? (it means you can set up a sweet avatar for the comments too)
Enjoy, and let’s all give Chris a big pat on the back!
UPDATE: User avatar uploads now work! So go to it! Bam!

P.S. Alec has made a REAL video blog with secrets in it. Secrets that we can’t show you yet. Secrets that involve a very handsome french man.
P.P.S. As mentioned in the video Justin Sanchez is super rad. He gave us the domain infiniteammo.com! For free! Check out his rad video game blog Reset Glitch.

Another fine game that I got the pleasure of writing music for is Crayon Physics Deluxe. The game took the Grand Prize at the IGF last year, and its about to be released in a few days. There’s also an iPhone version already available. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Many games fall into the old pattern of forcing the player to overcome obstacles using very rigid rules. CPD gives you the freedom to solve each level however you want. This design decision is a very welcome gust of fresh air.
My track for the game is called “Afternoon Snooze”, and its based on my feelings of playing the game. (I was an IGF judge last year)
MP3 Download → Afternoon Snooze [4:24]
You can check out the rest of the music from CPD here – and buy Crayon Physics Deluxe when it comes out. You’ll love it.
