Adam-art-Friday ended with some new, fresh, baby-bottom background buildings. Originally Chris’ idea, Adam fleshed it out and made it HAPPEN. He also replaced the backdrop image with more sexy!

In other news, our very own Ian Holowka has been working on music for H+V. But so has our very own Christopher Lobay. Recently Chris and Ian collaborated on the same track. For your development-blog-following enjoyment, I’ve included both versions so you can get a sense of how the track… changed.

In sad news, we’ve exceeded the iPhone’s feeble memory barrier with all our wonderful sounds that we recorded last weekend.
The result of our efforts are random crashing and rampant frustration. The solution: remove and compress?

I’m digging the lo-fi, old school feel of both tracks. If memory is an issue, I’ve noticed the Ian and Chris versions are running at 128 and 192 kbps respectively, and such music doesn’t lose as much at significantly lower bit rates as higher-fi music, and actually gains a more authentic lo-fi, old school feel. This seems to be the case with my own compositions, anyway. I’m sorry you may have to ditch material from the recording session. Here’s hoping you manage a satisfactory solution.

Now I remember! That flame face is G.I.R. from Invader Zim! Though perhaps a coincidence.. BG and overall design looks smashing anyhow.
Ian, Your version is very “to the point” and precise. Good formatting.
Chris, Your version seems to get distracted. Good timing and synth choice.
I think you guys should colaborate. I know plenty of songs and sountracks that have gone that way and turned out great. Heh, don’t know if my cristism was welcome, but they’re both well developing tracks.

This may sound like an obvious question, but if the iphone can’t hold that much sound in memory, what stops you from streaming things like music from disk, (or even just make a caching system to store things on the disk that are least often used, and keep things in memory that are most often used)?
……….or is the problem that you don’t even have enough disk space?

You can only stream one audio file at once. That means the music can be compressed, but the sound effects can’t be.
(which makes sense, think of the CPU usage)

The Ian one seems more like something that is meant to be played in a loop, and then you find yourself humming the tune the next day.
The Chris one is more content and it switches up the melody a bit too, making it less repetitive. Very good to just sit and listen, even when you’re not playing a video game.
In conclusion, tough choice to pick just one for the game! Both of you guys sound great.
And although I wouldn’t expect any less from Infinite Ammo, I’m amazed at how great the game is looking and coming along. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

Great tracks. What software do you guys use to produce this work? I’m really wanting to get into tinkering with music more. I’ve experimented with a fruity loops demo on the pc and garageband for the mac.

We all use FL Studio! (Fruity Loops) Its great.

I’m a fan of both, too. The Ian one tastes like Ian music, which makes me happy, and the Chris one tastes like Chris music, which also make me happy. I demand more rap collaborations in the vein of Why’ter Than Thou.

Random question; will you guys only be releasing H+V for the iphone? No PC downloads?
Alec Holowka wrote a Comment on March 16, 2009 at 2:31 am
Not sure, but we’d like to do a PC/Mac version later.

Awesome, I knew you guys wouldn’t disappoint on jazzing up those backgrounds! I was thinking about commenting on it before, but I was like “Nope nope, these guys are thorough, they’ll change it up for sure.” Not that things looked bad before, but you guys knew they wouldn’t hurt from going up to the next level.
Music’s great of course. I agree with some of these other folk, and it’d be great if you found a way to squeeze in both. Ian’s is a nice quick loop, while Chris’ is more atmospheric, easier to listen to for a long time. Like in Mega Man where you got the Stage Select theme, and then in the Wily Stage you’ve got the Teleporter Room theme. That sorta thing.

Happy to prove you right!

Has production stopped on this game? Hope not, but haven’t heard anything in months.

Its on hold for now, I’m reassessing what works and what doesn’t.
RIght now the interface is generally too hard for people to figure out, so I’m trying to figure out a way to solve that. (getting input from other indie game developers on this too)
