So I just sat down and recorded an impromptu Unity3D introduction tutorial. Its a bit all over the place (I didn’t plan it out), but hopefully some of you will find it useful.
Unity3D is a game engine that you can try out for free, for both PC and Mac. Download it at unity3d.com.
It was used to create Paper Moon, Heroes + Villains and we’re also using it for Marian.
You can download the (crappy) project created in this tutorial right here: UnityTutorial01.zip.
Please let me know if found these helpful and/or what you think I can do to improve them. (I’d like to do more!) Thanks!

Nice, I’d love to see more of these from you Alec. I also love how the new Tegan and Sara is on in the background.

I was hoping I would find some Unity videos before I finished my latest iPhone project. Good timing! I’m nearly done!
Unity looks really great. Some other topics I wouldn’t mind hearing about from you – collision detection, memory management, particle effects, and game structure within Unity (could possibly be shown off by creating a simple game).
Thanks and good job!

This is definitely helpful. I’m an artist learning programming basics, so this answered a few questions I had about both Unity and programming.
Also, what screen capture software did you use to make this? It looks really handy.
Thanks

I hadn’t realized how awesome Unity actually was until I watched your tutorial Alec! You have no idea how excited this makes me. NO IDEA! Awesome tutorial.

I’ve been using Unity for some time now. Truly excellent tool, by an excellent company.
It would be really cool if you showed some insights into the making of Marian in Unity in the future!

Does China block all of YouTube or just certain videos?
Kert Gartner wrote a Comment on November 18, 2009 at 3:14 pm
You could give Vimeo a try… I’m not sure if that’s blocked in China?

That was actually really informative and easy to follow.
You are very good at explaining a program that quickly becomes far to confusing. It would be fantastic if you made a more complete and still free tutorial like this and added it to the sidebar of infinite ammo.
But even if you don’t, that was a nice video.

Nice tutorial Alec. I just started looking into Unity and then came across your videos. Now I understand the basics at least. If possible, more detailed and/or advanced tutorials would be nice. Importing meshes, creating a menu, etc. Overall, really well done though. Thanks!

Really well done tutorial, alec. Can’t wait for some time to get back to unity. And yes indeed, it is pronounced “oiler”.
