Marian Mondays: Animation Party

Howdy! This update about our upcoming game Marian made it in just under the wire today. :)

Last week, a number of us got together last week to work on improving the animations in the game. Here’s a brief window into the discussion about Marian’s run cycle:

In case you’re wondering, our animator is Winnipeger Liem Nguyen.

Hey, good video with some great insight into the game,

but how about for the running animation you go talk nicely to a gym, ask them if you can use a treadmill for five minutes, or pay for a session, record it on camera and use the footage to rotoscope it, or if not rotoscope it, at least use it as a reference. It’s incredibly useful having footage you can scrub through for animation.

@1: We are using homemade footage as reference for the animations, as evinced in this and another previous video, and it’s been working really well for most of the animations (and you’re right, it is extreeeemely useful!). The run animation in particular, however, is not meant to look in any way like realistic running… so as cool as it would be to film a gym-goer or a paid model, in this case it would be more hindrance than help :(

A rather large smile crept across my face as I was watching this and suddenly the Aquaria soundtrack was playing. I still listen to it all the time. So glad you guys put that out. ^_^

Clearly more game development needs to be done in pajamas!

The run cycle you were going for reminded me a bit like the one used for Mercedes the fairy, from Odin Sphere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eZ62zYkd0 (0:45)
Something floaty, like she’s not-quite-touching the ground.
Maybe get some springs, or do the walk on a mattress?
