Its taken a long time to get here, but here is where we find ourselves…
So begins the tale of the puppet-girl Marian, who finds herself lost in a strange and shifting land.
Marian is going to be a difficult and expensive game to produce – but its one that I care about more than any other project I’ve ever worked on. I want nothing more than to see it completed one day and released for everyone to experience!
Read on if you’re interested in supporting this project directly.
If you’re excited by what we’ve conjured up for you here, please consider sending us a few dollars to help us get this project off the ground. I will be attempting to fund the bulk of the endeavor out of my own pocket, but every extra bit helps. Those who offer support of $10 or more will receive a special “Friends of Marian” credit in the final game.
Thanks a lot for your consideration.

Tried my best to support you
Hopefully we will see more of this upcoming gorgeous game (guess it will be your first 3D game ?)….
Michael Samyn wrote a Comment on September 17, 2009 at 1:02 am
Does the 3D in the video mean that Marian will be a 3D game? If so, how exciting!! It’s about time indie developers started taking interactive 3D seriously. There’s a lot of work to be done!…
If (Marian==3D) { totDonates("for sure"); }
Nice logo, by the way.

Great stuff! Normally I’m more into 2D games, but this game I’ll await with anticipation.

Congrats guys, a very well crafted trailer! Cannot wait to know more about the game. I’ll do my donation asap!
Oh, having a 3d trailer doesn’t mean that the game needs to be 3d too guys

I wish you all the best of luck with this project. I love the enthusiasm and heart that you all put into your projects. I sent over a donation with what I had left in my paypal account, so I apologize for the odd-ball amount. It should buy a few meals to keep you all going.

Im sure this is just movie footage. Its a tease, so it doesnt say much. I dunno about the 3d thing, I thought aquaria was beautiful 2d game. Maybe if they just improve upon that somehow. I look forward to it. Id like to know how far along they are. Aquaria took 2 years to make so Im guestimating that alec is almost half way there, hopefully.
John wrote a Comment on September 19, 2009 at 11:13 am
Here’s my same comment from TIGSource,
Looking forward to the game, but, I really hope it’s a 2D game in the end. 2D games and 3D. IMHO, it would take far more work to create a special 3D game, something that would feel unique and still enjoyable. Unfortunately, most 3D games today feel very average and I’m not really talking about Indie games so much, but the amount of work that goes into a 3D game only for it to come out as a generic 3D platformer really isn’t what we need. I think it would take much longer to flesh out a 3D game and something that an indie can put their creative effort into. However, it might take less time to make 3D cutscenes than to try and make an entire game 3D, a game that is both unique and engaging I mean. Again, this is only my opinion and I don’t expect anyone else to agree but here’s how I see it in short, I can’t think of any 3D indie games that I would pay as much as I did for Aquaria. Why is that? I just don’t feel that most indies would have the time to make a fully fleshed out and realized 3D adventure. Ultimately, I don’t think there would be the same bang for the buck. Here’s another example I’d like to use: I enjoyed Zeno Clash, but again, I would never pay as much for it as I did for Aquaria. It’s nowhere near as long, it’s not really a full adventure game yet I’m sure that a lot of work was put into it as well. There just isn’t the same amount of gameplay value though. That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t pay the same amount for a 3D indie game, it would just have to be of the same high quality and gameplay value, Aquaria (and numerous other 2D indie games) have lasting appeal, most 3D indie games don’t (again, just my opinion). Hopefully that’s understandable. When I think about it, perhaps 2.5D is another possibility, if the team at Infinite Ammo team did want to somehow utilize 3D gameplay in some way (interacting with a background or foreground parallax for example).
This hasn’t been an attempt to start a flame war on what’s better, but I think there are more than enough generic 3d titles to take your pick from on most consoles. Again, I think a realistic direction to take the game would be 2D or even 2.5D
Additional Note:
I think it might be cool to be able to manipulate shadows in some way (either the shadow of Marian, her enemies, or the environment). I can’t think of another game that allows the player to use the enemies own shadow to scare them away.
)) Perhaps Marian’s strings will allow her to do more than we think.
Looking forward to this game though!

Alec, talking with you about this project back at GDC San Francisco convinced me of how sincerely you believe in it. I’m excited to see this start to take off. I’m really interested in how you will present the story components- you have some great ideas.
I’m very curious about how much relation this trailer has to the in-game visuals, but I suppose that will remain a mystery for the time being
Best wishes, everyone!

Honestly, after already experiencing the awesomeness that is this concept art and music combo: http://infiniteammo.ca/blog/announcing-marian/ , the teaser here is a bit of a let down. I’m still excited about the project, and will probably contribute when I can afford to, but I, personally, would love to see more along the lines of the original concepts.
Nava wrote a Comment on September 20, 2009 at 9:41 am
Concepts develop and change over time…. I doubt there are any games that end up looking like their very first concepts, and I further doubt that this trailer will be completely representative of the final product. I personally think it’s a good thing that developers change and refine their visions along the way; it means that they’re actively thinking about the character, world, and themes, and reworking the reality as the elements solidify and take form.

Of course I would like to support this regardless, but…. do you see any possibility of a Mac build, as there was for Aquaria?
Alec Holowka wrote a Comment on September 20, 2009 at 11:27 am
25: Yeah, I’m going to do a Mac version.
23: More like the original concepts in what way?
WaywardG wrote a Comment on September 20, 2009 at 5:58 pm
26: Namely 2D vs. 3D. The concept art in the link I posted earlier has, in my opinion, an amazing aesthetic to it that I feel would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to replicate or improve upon in 3D. I promise I won’t be upset if you can prove me wrong. In fact, I would be delighted, but I hope you can see why I have misgivings about the 3D.
Alec Holowka wrote a Comment on September 21, 2009 at 3:20 pm
27: Yeah, I can understand why it has a different feel to it.
It’ll be interesting to see what you think of the next video when it comes out.

Just donated, and said the same comments on my donation, but never hurts to repeat, right?
I’m a huge Aquaria fan and really looking forward to Marian. I know you’ve got your own ideas about what to do with it, but I just think it would be cool to give a nod to previous works as easter eggs in the piece, like say have Lucien appear in a story book, or a paper moon sound piece hidden somewhere…you know, fun stuff for the big fans. Anyway, can’t wait to see what comes of this.
