Its time to reveal secrets. For the last week and a bit I’ve been down in Arizona working on a new version of Paper Moon for release on the free, web-based indie game portal Blurst.com.

New Paper Moon

Paper Moon is inspired by a fusion of pop-up books and Ella Fitzgerald’s classic song “Its Only a Paper Moon”. It was previously released as part of the Gamma3D art game show in Montreal last November 2008.

The new version of Paper Moon features a combo-based scoring system, new levels, improved visuals, musical score (by yours truly), sound effects, greater replay value and online leaderboards/achievements/bonuses.

Infinite Ammo – Flashbang Collaboration

The new Paper Moon is the result of a collaboration between myself and my friends at Flashbang studios. Down here in Tempe, AZ I’ve been focused on writing the score of the game, implementing new features and tweaking gameplay. Ben Ruiz (FB art director) has been busy creating brand new sexy art. Steve Swink (game designer, arts institute teacher) has been designing new levels, gameplay concepts and setting up the combo system for maximum re-playability. Shawn White is also in on the action helping us integrate the game with Blurst and finding bugs.

The resulting game is a mix of all of our styles, and I’m hoping fans of our previous work will see the influences from both sides.

The new version even got a notice in the Wallstreet Journal of all places! (and Rock Paper Shotgun)

You’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of our labors on Friday for free on Blurst.com.

To play the game, either use an XBox360 Controller or the arrow keys, space bar and the x key. There currently isn’t any sound in the game, as it was made for Gamma3D’s loud party atmosphere, but feel free to loop this in the background for the time being.

Hey ladies and gentlemen! Yesterday we started a video blog, and it was a very eventful day. We’re currently in Montreal for the Montreal International Games Summit. We decided to create a bunch of print material to hand out at our booth, and to that end we created 2 sets of 100 posters featuring artwork from unannounced games that we’re working on. You’ll get a look at those in our video blog, and we’ll also be showing them in more detail on the site soon!

Paper Moon special guest developer Adam Saltsman recently wrote about the experience of working on the game for Play-Make.

Adam says: “Infinite Ammo recently wrapped up their first game, an anaglyphic demo for Gamma3D called Paper Moon. I got to work on some of the environment art, and it was just a blast, the most fun I’ve had making a game in a while. The whole thing took about 10 days, Alec and the rest of the crew in Winnipeg were awesome to work with. It was kind of a weird process though!”

“Most of the art was completed in around a week. I used a few dozen sheets of copy paper, 3 Sharpie Professionals, a pair of scissors, a Canon scanner, and Photoshop 7 to do the cleanup after converting the images to digital.”

Howdy, Alec here. We managed to finish our demo of Paper Moon for the Gamma3D submission deadline, and we ended up with a pretty awesome result. We’ll find out if we’re selected for the event on November 1st.

Check out this scene with your own pair of 3D glasses!

The day after the demo was done, it was featured at an event promoting Winnipeg game development to rural Manitoba high school kids. Check out this video by New Media Manitoba’s Kevin Hnatiuk: (featuring the music of local band Paper Moon!)

[Vimeo 2018252]

It was a really cool experience crunching on the game with the Infinite Ammo team. I don’t think I’ve worked with a more talented, funny and classy group of people before!

We also had help from the multi-talented Adam Saltsman, who created a lot of the environment art by drawing it on paper, cutting it out and scanning it in.

We’re making a game for the Gamma3D event! Gamma is a yearly gathering of independent developers in Montreal organized by Phil Fish. Each year the event is centered around a different theme, and this year’s happens to be stereoscopic 3D.

Chris and I managed to find a good way to do the 3D effect today, so we ran out and bought some 3D glasses at Toad Hall Toys. The game looks awesome in 3D.

Some folks may remember hearing about my entry into last year’s Gamma, Célu.

And wow, I just made two posts in a row that mention Phil. HAWT.
