The Monocle Engine

Hey all! It’s been a while, but we’ve been busy.

Matt Thorson (Jumper, Ogmo Editor) and I have been working on a new 2D game engine. We’re planning on using it for our projects, if all goes well.

We started the project on March 14. Two weeks later, the engine already runs on Windows, Mac and Linux and has three WIP editors for levels and animations.

One of the cool things about the engine is that it’s open source. (under the MIT license)

I’ve put together a video to share some of the early tests we’ve been making with the engine:

For more info on Monocle and links to the source, check out monoclepowered.org

P.S. For some reason I uploaded a video that plays the same content twice. Oops!

Some people have been asking how much this engine has to do with Marian. Hopefully I’ll be able to talk more about that soon. :)

Really looking forward to this moving ahead! As a striving and learning indie developer im really excited about where this could go, especially with the fact that its open source!

I think this is wonderful work and a fantastic initiative.

My suggestion to the project, is to make it as easy to use for complete newcomers, as possible, and yet still keep it extremely flexible.

I used to very fond of RPG maker, a very unflexible program. It was a point ‘n click game making program. The easy of use was amazing. A main window for placing tiles, and a side window for tiles to place and a side window for maps in the game.

But the program didn’t allow for difference resolutions, and forced characters to move in a fixed grid.

I don’t know know where the project is going, but I love your fighting spirit and progress.

    Keep it going!

Cool stuff and good work, Alec!

(Which kind of theme do you use for the Visual Studio code editor? Looks neat!)

[...] Now that that is out of the way, i will be able to build levels a heck of a lot quicker and cleaner. The paths are for a number of things, and there is also a ‘pathed mesh’, based on the awesome idea from infinite ammo’s Alex Holowka and his monocle engine videos. The idea is that you can draw paths with a texture thats tiled along them, making it quick to lay down elements in a level in nice ways. Be sure to check out his videos here. [...]
