TIGJam: Winnipeg?

I want to do a TIGJam in Winnipeg! “Great!” you say, “What’s a TIGJam?”

TIGJam is a game jam format that grew out of the TIGSource online indie game community. There have been two very successful iterations in Phoenix, one in the US midwest, one in the UK and one in Berlin! The formula is really simple, but leads to good times and valuable learning experiences.

* Show up for a day or two
* Bring your laptop, your positive/creative vibes and your experience
* Work on a new project, an old project – in a team or by yourself
* Meet new people that are working in the games scene in Winnipeg and make new friends!
* Share your experience with others with short presentations (e.g. a series of 5 minute rants)
* Not just for game programmers! Composers, artists, modellers, etc should definitely attend.
* We’d probably charge a small registration fee, like $5-10 to cover the cost of some food (and maybe some t-shirts for everyone?)

I’d like to run this out of the Fortune Cat game studio incubator, it’s on Albert street in the exchange.

If you’re interested, please leave a comment and let us know what you think a good time would be! :) (December -> Summer? [our poll plugin broke])

Tentatively called TIGJam – Canada? O:

Let it be known I’d prefer a Manitoban spring over the winter. Very good location; close to the Forks which could make for some respectable eats.

This would be awesome to have in Winnipeg!

I’m not sure what a UX guy like myself could contribute, but maybe I can pick up modelling/texturing again in time for this. :)

I’ll carry the water if you light the fire.

The JAM can be held at Fortune Cat.

A Winnipeg TIGJam would indeed be epic! I’d definitely be able to make it in December, and I’d probably be also be able to make it if it were in the spring or summer. :)

Very cool idea. I’ve been wanting to do something like this ever since I heard about the one they did at the 360iDev in Denver this year. Not sure I could pull an all-nighter though! Are you thinking of doing this over a couple of days, during the day? Much more do-able for me…

I vote in favor of this happening even though I no longer live there, just because I wish it would’ve happened while I did.

There is a very reasonable chance I would attend a gejam in The Peg.

6: Probably only “all night” for folks that want to. My guess is it’d be like a Saturday, Sunday or maybe Fri, Sat, Sun thing.

This would be totally awesome, and the Fortune Cat incubator would be a great place to host it. I’ve been there a few times.

Anyways, I’d love to go, but I’m only 16 :P

The golden boy looks pretty cute with a monocle.
Which is all the reason to encourage a Peg TIGJam.

I’d love to come by too, but I don’t have a laptop to bring just yet! :)

Fortune Cat has a few PCs that we can use, and I have a couple extra laptops. I’m sure we could pool together enough computers so that everyone’s covered…

Hey Alec, so I just found out over on TIGS that one of the Global Game Jam locations this year is Calgary, meaning that a bunch of us (farther) Western Canadians will be going to that (last weekend of January btw). So I figure you could host the Winnipeg TIGJam at that time and tie it in to that global event, OR you still host the Winnipeg jam at a different time, so that going to both would be an option for those not afraid of long drives, haha. :)

I’d totally attend, Alec! It doesn’t cost me to travel, so I’d surely hit this up. I’ll be attending the GGJ in Calgary as well this year, so it’ll be double-trouble on the Chevy bus.

    …I’m so lame :(

    Hope this happens!

Cool, sounds like we should avoid having it in January then. :)
